Emergent mapping: Mapping sense and feeling

Abstract

Maps have always been used as colonial instruments of knowing: territories, peoples, places, worlds. Counter-maps undermine the claims of objectivity hidden in lines and legends that obscure power relations. Instead, we ask – how does this place make you feel? This zine sets out to publish a guide to counter-mapping our own personal worlds through our bodies’ senses and emotions. We look at local dumpstering routes and bins, offering an emotional map of the journey to the dumpster and a sensory cross section of its contents. No two counter-maps are the same, and even as authors we find difference and richness in our experiences of dumpster feelings. We hope it inspires you to dream up your own feel-maps at home.
