Abstract

This is a brief glossary of words you will encounter in academia: diversity, inclusion, civility, professionalism, progress, and institution. The glossary provides critical definitions of these terms that demonstrate how they are used to reproduce white supremacist and cisheteropatriarchal institutional cultures. It is a handy guide for QTBIPOC and other minoritized folks entering the academy that can help them make sense of these discourses and what they actually accomplish. It is also a much-needed resource for those privileged in these spaces that can guide a critical engagement with and awareness of dominant cultures of academia and their exclusions.
